What you need to know:

  • At the direction of the UTP Operating Committee (UTPOC), to promote increased throughput, the NASDAQ Securities Information Processor (SIP) will add new logical data channels to the IP address configurations and reallocate the traffic to go across six (rather than three) logical channels.
  • The SIP will also significantly increase the bandwidth allocation for the UTP feeds.
  • Scheduled for implementation in July 2009, this configuration will go into effect as a "hot-cut" change.
  • All direct connect UTP Quotation Data Feed (UQDF) and UTP Trade Data Feed (UTDF) subscribers, as well as extranet providers, should make plans to upgrade their data circuits by July 20, 2009.

How will the new channel configuration affect the alpha split?

In order to promote increased throughput at the direction of the UTP Operating Committee (UTPOC), the NASDAQ Securities Information Processor (SIP) will add new logical data channels to the existing IP address configurations.

To facilitate a smooth transition, the NASDAQ SIP will introduce six new IP multicast addresses and reallocate the alphabetic split for the UTP Quotation Data FeedSM (UQDFSM) and UTP Trade Data FeedSM (UTDFSM).

Upon implementation, the new IP multicast addresses and alpha channel distribution will be as follows:

  IP Address Group A Port16 Port10 IP Address Group B Port16 Port10
UTP Quotation Data Feed:
UQDF (A-B) 224.0.17.48 D8EA 55530 224.0.17.49 D8EB 55531
UQDF (C-D) 224.0.17.50 D8EC 55532 224.0.17.51 D8ED 55533
UQDF (E-I) 224.0.17.52 D8EE 55534 224.0.17.53 D8EF 55535
UQDF (J-N) 224.0.17.54 D8F0 55536 224.0.17.55 D8F1 55537
UQDF (O-R) 224.0.17.56 D8F2 55538 224.0.17.57 D8F3 55539
UQDF (S-Z) 224.0.17.58 D8F4 55540 224.0.17.59 D8F5 55541
Revised: UTP Trade Data Feed:
UTDF (A-B) 224.0.1.92 D8F6 55542 224.0.1.93 D8F7 55543
UTDF (C-D) 224.0.1.94 D8F8 55544 224.0.1.95 D8F9 55545
UTDF (E-I) 224.0.1.96 D8FA 55546 224.0.1.97 D8FB 55547
UTDF (J-N) 224.0.1.98 D8FC 55548 224.0.1.99 D8FD 55549
UTDF(O-R) 224.0.1.100 D8FE 55550 224.0.1.101 D8FF 55551
UTDF (S-Z) 224.0.1.102 D900 55552 224.0.1.103 D901 55553

What are the new bandwidth allocations?

As a result of the increase in data channels, the SIP will also increase the bandwidth allocation for the UQDF by approximately 87% and UTDF by approximately 78%. The new bandwidth allocations will be:

Data Feed Current Bandwidth Allocation New Bandwidth Allocation Approximate Throughput Message Rate
UQDF 30.0 Megabits (Mb) 56.0 Mb 100,000 messages per second (mps)
UTDF 4.5 Mb 8.0 Mb 15,000 mps

Will this be a "hot cut" release?

Yes, the NASDAQ SIP will implement the UTP IP multicast channel and bandwidth changes as a “hot cut” release on Monday, July 20, 2009.

On July 20th, the NASDAQ SIP will disseminate UTP data over the new IP multicast channels using the new split alphabet only. To ensure continued receipt of UQDF and UTDF data, a direct connect data feed subscriber must configure its network to read the new IP multicast groups.

Will there be testing opportunities?

Yes, in preparation for this change, the SIP will be conducting weekend stress tests in June and July of 2009. The SIP will inform data recipients as testing details become available. Direct data feed subscribers should use these opportunities to stress test their internal systems.
