NASDAQ Index Dissemination Service (NIDS) Issue Symbol Participation

NASDAQ® is focused on creating new and innovative financial products for investors and traders. In support of this goal, NASDAQ will soon expand its system functionality to incorporate non-NASDAQ securities in its index calculations.

Today, NASDAQ disseminates Issue Symbol Participation messages on the NASDAQ Index Dissemination ServiceSM (NIDSSM) data feed. This administrative message provides component and security weighting information for NASDAQ indices. The current Issue Symbol Participation (Category A – Type W) message format is designed specifically for NASDAQ-listed securities.

In association with the index system changes, NASDAQ plans to add a second Issue Symbol Participation message to NIDS for non-NASDAQ securities in July 2005. The new Category A – Type V message format is designed to support issue symbols from other securities exchanges. For non-NASDAQ securities, the issue symbol field will reflect the security identifier as assigned by the market of origin. For example: The issue symbol for a New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) listed issue in the NIDS message format will match the security identifier as it is disseminated by SIAC on the Consolidated Quotation System (CQS) data feed.

NASDAQ will provide the new Issue Symbol Participation only for non-NASDAQ issues that are component securities in a NASDAQ index. Like the existing Issue Symbol Participation message, the Category A – Type V message will be comprised of a message label and one or more attachments and it will be disseminated prior to market open. NASDAQ may also disseminate this message if the security symbol or weighting information changes intra-day.

NASDAQ plans to implement the code for the new Issue Symbol Participant – Non-NASDAQ Issues message format on NIDS on or about July 18, 2005. In advance of this NIDS release, NASDAQ will offer evening and weekend testing opportunities for data feed subscribers. Once the schedule has been confirmed, NASDAQ will post a vendor alert with the test dates.
